Growing Up
Welcome to Twist Digital + Design Inc. We are so happy you found us!
After reading the About page, you might wonder why two wild innovative sisters together collaborated to create Twist. Although we may not have planned to start our own digital agency from the get-go, the story all comes together. Buckle up! We are going back to the ’80s
Danielle, or “Danielle Tatings” as she liked to introduce herself, was born late one Saturday, on “Tober 2nd” in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. Growing up, Dani was a timid but creative child who often got lost in her world of paints and glitter.
She loved everything crafty - drawing, painting, sewing; you name it! What was her favourite colour? Lellow. As you can see by Twist’s branding, it still is. However, as an introverted creative, Dani needed someone to push her out of her comfort zone. In the spring of 1986, her parents brought her little sister Kelly home. After some minor hesitation, Dani was thrilled. Now she had a best friend and champion for life!
“Smelly Kelly” was never actually smelly. The nickname rhymed, and much to Kelly’s disappointment, it happened to stick. Kelly came into this world with a vengeance. She knew from the start what she liked and has never been afraid to tell you. Kelly was bright, funny, and adventurous.
She loved to play Library and School and took this past-time very seriously. She even had a complete kit with an official stamp, ink pad and sign-out cards to prove her commitment to the cause. Dani was regularly told what to do and was often summoned to be her assistant or student. Although Dani might lead you to believe otherwise, she enjoyed every minute.
The girls loved to spend time with their Great Grandparents, Ray and Beryl. At the apartment on 12th Street, they were treated like royalty and would invent and test recipes, create high-quality artwork displayed for years to come and laugh to their heart’s content for days at a time.
The sisters also loved to spend time with their Grandparents, Hartley and Yvonne, at the farm in the summer. Between the tickle trunk dress-up fashion shows, the mini kitchen bake-offs, the outdoor forts featuring mud pies, the expansive family garden, the big barn with a million trinkets, or the baby animals a quarter mile down the road at Pretty’s dairy farm, there were no limits for their imaginations. One thing is certain; the girls were loved and allowed to explore their creative visions.
Dani may have been the instigator for many of their adventures, but Kelly was a natural-born leader and surprisingly good at getting others to understand her vision. Unsurprisingly, when the idea of starting a business came to light, they knew it was the best decision to do it together.
Tune in to the next installment to read how the sisters were Shown by Example.
